"Sevilay Maria is an inherently nomadic, autodidactic maker of analog photographs, prints and magic, currently based in Amsterdam. After some years at the KABK in The Hague, she decided to take her work elsewhere. She traveled through over thirty countries, documenting landscapes and people wherever she went, before specializing in wet plate collodion photography.  The beauty of this technique, is that it relies equally on the chemistry between photographer and subject as on a fluency in the chemical process involved. Open-minded, free-spirited and a gipsy at heart, Sevilay is constantly searching for synergy, and finds this more often than not.
Artist Statement;
‘Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement of the subject is my process. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous to capture its unique self. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places’. "

"Sevilay Maria is founder of Principles of Light and specializes in wet-plate collodion photography. An analogue technique from 1851, with which Sev puts ultra-contemporary people on the record. She has seen all the corners of the world.
In 2016 I flew to Lesvos, to see with my own eyes what the refugee crisis meant. I would go back after a week but the situation was so shocking that I decided to stay - six months in total. At first I was working on primary issues; distribute food and clothing. Gradually I started giving photography lessons. It made people so happy. Working with the light, I remembered, is something that I can use anywhere in the world. That is how the name for the project came into being, Inside Light.
Sevilay founded Insight Light together with Sebastian Gil Miranda and Oliver Zimmermann. The photography project gives children in bad living conditions the chance to capture positive moments in their lives, which are often not seen by the media.
Recently I entered into a partnership with CHPO, a Swedish brand that is committed to charitable causes. Together we designed a watch and in May and June we organize two exhibitions with my work (in Stockholm and the Netherlands), of which the proceeds go to Inside Light. Then I want to go with my partner to Bangladesh, or to a refugee camp in Lebanon, to bring the money and the skills to the places where it is needed.
Furthermore, this year I want to enter the world with Principles of Light (portraits). Last year I prepared all this and worked on my presentation and brand. This year is a turnaround year. At the moment I am talking to a gallery and an agency, and I want to bring out my law-plate collodion work more in the coming year.
What makes the technique so special is that you have a real encounter. It is a slow process and because the plates are very expensive, I can only make one or two shots per shoot. The preparation requires a lot of attention and this leads to increased concentration in both the portrayed and in me. That focus often leads to synergy. I also like to combine different worlds, and to show the contrast between old and new.
Because I am working on my own thing, it does not feel like work, but it is constantly there, from morning to evening. It is a tremendous challenge to get it where you want, but if it succeeds, it gives the greatest kick you can imagine. In the meantime I am no longer alone - a whole team is involved in Principles of Light (fluidity). There is a stylist, an assistant, someone who helps me with the branding and my partner works a lot - the team is now indispensable."  KEES DE BOEKHOUDER
